For fuck's sake. Are we still playing the "political parties are the same now as they were then if it proves that Democrats are the baddies" game? OK, @DineshDSouza, since the parties are the same, you'll commit to the following elements of Republican party platforms? (thread)
1: In 1864 the Republican platform committed the party to encouraging immigration and welcoming refugees seeking asylum. Good thing the you and your Republican buddies have continued to embrace those principles, right?
2. In 1868, the Republicans said "The guaranty by Congress of equal suffrage to all loyal men at the South was demanded by every consideration of public safety, of gratitude, and of justice, and must be maintained," so I assume you're demanding DeSantis and Kemp resign.
3. I mean, if @DineshDSouza really thinks the parties today are the same as they were in the Civil War era, then he is clearly against the Trump tax cuts, because those *clearly* violate the Republican commitments of 1868, as stated in their platform:
4. Clearly today's Republicans are living the spirit of their 1868 platform. Nothing but pure, consistent fidelity, right?
5. Let's look at the 1872 platform: I assume that since the parties are the same today, Dinesh believes Shelby v. Holder was decided in error, that the Muslim Ban is unconstitutional, and he supports vigorous and effective civil rights legislation:
6. Since the parties have never changed, then I eagerly await Dinesh's lobbying the Republican majority in the Senate to come out against voter suppression and racial injustices in mass incarceration, because they stood against them in 1876:
7. Yes, of course this is absurd, but @DineshDSouza's continual insistence that somehow the Democrats' proslavery convictions in the Civil War era is some tightly-kept secret of which we historians will never speak is even more so.
8. As with Trump, when D'Souza says "NO ONE WILL TELL YOU..." what he really means is "I JUST LEARNED THIS THING." Only someone thoroughly unacquainted with anything written by historians in the last century could argue that these "facts" have been hidden from public view.
9. But they haven't been! Historians study change over time-and there are literally thousands of accounts of both how the Democratic party was the party of slavery in the 1850s as well as how it was the party of civil rights in the 1950s and 60s. Change. Over. Time. Bro.
10. We keep dunking on Dinesh not because we think he'll change (spoiler: he won't), but because it's one way to reclaim actual historical turf within this hellsite's flood of bad-faith grifters who think everyone else is stupid enough to take their bait. Small victories.
11. Maybe @DineshDSouza really does believe politics are the same now as they were 150 years ago. Or maybe he thinks that if he repeats the lie enough, someone will actually buy the stacks of his books mouldering on the Costco clearance table. Either way, it's pathetic. /end
