Like any other industry - new market cap in tech aggregates to just a handful of cities
However, there are more cities around the world with at least one unicorn
Industry towns have the lion's share of private tech unicorns - irrespective of where in the world you are
Given markets are 10X bigger, will see more $1B+ companies everywhere, even more $10B+ companies in tech clusters

Pie is getting bigger for everyone, and more of it is available to others everywhere As pie grows, industry towns will take a larger share

“Industry towns” emerge due to the critical mass of having suppliers, customers, and investors in the same physical location.

For example, Hollywood and Bollywood for film, NY and London for finance, SF Bay Area, Bangalore and Beijing for tech.
If you wanted to go into the movie business and someone told you “you can make films from anywhere - you should move to Austin” you would think they were crazy.
Movies are written by authors who *could* live anywhere, are filmed onsite around the world, and *could* be digitally edited from anywhere. But most of it still happens in Hollywood.

While you *can* build a technology company from anywhere, it does not mean you should.

In the client/server world, enterprise apps were deployed inside the firewall. Thus the limiter on the number of apps that an enterprise could support was a function of whether IT could customize, deploy, support and upgrade apps.

2/ Consumer generation shift — Think about a consumer company that started ~7 years ago. Generations shift in about 7-10 years, thus tastes evolve, and platforms shift. Thus there is an opening to acquire customers, e.g. Snapchat started 2011 while Facebook started 2004
