I’m polyamorous so not exactly single but I love my life mostly as a single, childless person. I live for my friends, family, partners, and students. I live for joy, for creating change, for my writing, my organizing. I live to make the world better for myself & those like me.
I understand the OP was being genuine but seriously yall. Romantic partners & children are not a replacement for having a will to live. Relationships end. Children grow up. People die. You have to exist for yourself & invite others to share in your existence.
I’ve been thinking about this & just wanted to add that my tweet is not intended to be a bootstraps thing. It’s intended to say that society has told us our value is in our ability to have romantic love & reproduce, but our value is so much more.
Your will to live, what makes you thrive, is the totality of the world around you. Some of that is within your personal control, but much more is based on your access to community, to healthcare, to safety, to education. This is a social and political issue as well as personal.
I want ppl to find value in themselves outside of (or in addition to) romance & reproduction, but many are denied basic necessities that would allow time & space to find their passions & worth. Personal & societal growth aren’t separate. A more just world is a more fulfilled one.
