‘Why stay?’ ‘What is the point of storming?’ ‘Why stay to sacrifice yourself when the night is falling?’ ‘Why not ‘be water’ when the police begin to attack?

These are the frequently asked questions to the frontline protestors in recent protests.
I can summarise the mindset of the frontline protestors by just one sentence:
Our aim is simple: it is to make the police’s clearance efforts more difficult, every single time they attack.
The frontline protestors will only retreat under the following conditions:

1) All retreating routes have been blocked and no protestors are available to set up a defense barricade.
2)The police deploy weapons that will cause significant bodily harm.
3)The last train has left/is about to leave; police officers outnumber the remaining protesters, meaning that protesters will be easily targeted and subject to prosecution.

Unless one of the three conditions are met, we will stay.
Do not get injured? We are not afraid of small injuries and tear gas.
Do not get caught? The frontline protesters are capable of making the judgment call as to when to leave.
It is totally fine for you to leave.

Not everyone can stay until the last train.
You can leave when you see fit. However, do not ask others to leave with you. Do not try to ‘hijack’ the frontline by claiming that there has been a consensus to leave.
Every time there are people asking others to retreat before the police start their clearance action. They are always saying, ‘preserve yourself’ and “there is a next time”.
If the police’s clearance efforts become easier and easier, there will always be a “next time”. But if the police find it more and more difficult to disperse protesters, then one day, there will no longer be a “next time”.
Please do not hijack the frontline by claiming a false ‘deadline’ and indicating that there is a consensus to leave.

Thank you for your cooperation.
