Good argument for the German debate; but it still assumes that the mission is just an instrument to achieve the goal of integration. Other countries, especially France, see integration as an instrument to achieve the goal of having stronger missions.
I admit that in Germany there is a lot of pro-integration rhetoric, so it may be easier to get SPD on board by arguing that this is about Europe than by arguing that this is about the protection of a vital lifeline of international trade. /2
But unless we recognize freedom of navigation as a fundamental German interest, and realise that we cannot abstain, because globalization is our "way of life" -- we will not seriously contribute to missions. Nobody puts his soldiers in harms way for the goal of integration. /3
