The mass media's sputtering outrage at both the left and the right for criticizing their coverage is based on literally nothing but their own self-granted authority.
"You can't just say that!", they proclaim.
"Why not?" people ask.
"Because we're The News and we just said so!"
The government could never get away with acting like any skepticism about their motives is ridiculous and dangerous; checks and balances are built into government on the principle of distrust. The media have huge power, but have no such checks or balances.
The mass media demand public trust despite having violated that trust countless times, then claim that skepticism of their behavior is "dangerous" despite it being the only sane position based on facts in evidence. They have no legitimacy to do this.
There is not actually any law saying that people must trust the plutocratic media industrial complex, or that high-profile individuals must refrain from criticizing it. There is no substance whatsoever to their indignant outrage over these criticisms beyond their outrage itself.
