I've just written the most spine-chilling 1,000 words about Brexit! It covers Parliamentary sovereignty, and how our rights and protections will be put at risk by leaving the EU. I'm sure I had less white hair a couple of hours ago. Here's a taster. the rest will be in my book...
Here's a second little bit from the same section, which is now 1,500 words long. I have to clear my head for a bit before tackling the next piece for writing...

The Jeremy Corbyn dilemma
[Please read to end of thread (marked "THE END") before commenting - thank you]

1. JC has to call any VONC for it to be binding (any MP can, but Boris Johnson can ignore anyone else's). So JC's role is vital.
2. JC has said he will only call a VONC if he is sure that it will succeed. To be "sure", he will need strong commitments from enough non-Labour MPs in advance (presumably public ones so they can't back out afterwards). He needs moderate Tories on board, as well as other parties.
3. However, JC insists that he must be made PM afterwards. And he has said he won't support a Government of National Unity led by anyone but him.

The problem is the VONC chicken and egg:

1. Corbyn has to call it.

2. Corbyn won't call it unless he's sure it will succeed ("when the time is right").

3. But Corbyn insists he must be PM. Not enough MPs will back that idea for VONC to succeed.

4. So it will never get called.
5. But that means the attempt to form a GNU will also not happen.

6. So we get a no deal Brexit. Hello darkness, my old friend...

If Corbyn changes the situation in step 3 by taking a pragmatic approach, all the rest could be different too. And we could have a happy outcome.
Under the current system the LOTO has to be the one to call a VONC. Nobody is disputing LOTO's Corbyn. He is super key to VONC!

But he won't call VONC if he can't win it & he can't win it if precondition is he'll be made PM. So he won't call it at all unless he changes his tune.

"Labour will allow councils to seize abandoned shops to give them a new lease of life as cooperatives or community centres" Typical! Another policy based on theft. Those shops are owned by someone, who may already be desperate because they can't fill them. theguardian.com/politics/2019/…
So what would Corbyn do? Steal the properties off their owners and just hand them to the state.

This is the perfect example of why Labour finds it so hard to win the backing of businesses.
It's hyper populist because many people won't care about the reality of the underlying situation. They'll just think: "Awesome. All those grotty boarded up shops will be a thing of the past."

EU emergency #brexit summit 10 April will start 6pm in Brussels. The PM will be invited to ‘engage’ with the 27 EU leaders +inform them of her plans/requests. She’ll then like last time be asked to leave the room while the 27 try to come to unified position required by EU law /1
Leaders are divided. No one likes idea of long #brexit delay - if PM asks for it - and it only takes one country (France in frontline) to say no - as EU decision must be unanimous BUT /2
If the UK does as EU had requested and agrees to holding European parliamentary elections as a condition for being granted a longer #Brexit delay then it’s hard to imagine EU saying no. Even if the PM only presents a vague plan of what intends to do during longer extension /3

1) Thread - All Brexits are bad and what we voted for
It's often said by brexiters that "it's not all about economics"
However, the *actual* Leave campaign was almost wholly about economic arguments

With the leak of this 2-8% report those arguments are now trashed
2) We seem to have forgotten this however economics played a huge part in the Vote Leave campaign, making up over 2/3rds of the primary arguements. The clear message was we would at the least be no worse off and at best much better off. 4 of the 6 below state this clearly
3) & the fact is voters believed we would be no worse off. People prioritized immigration certainly, but against a backdrop of there being no consequences from Brexit - few are prepared to actually pay for ending FoM

#Brexit as a concept is increasingly drifting from having anything whatsoever to do with the mechanics of leaving the EU. It is now primarily a culture war and both sides will totally ignore the details except for when they are temporarily convenient.
The consequence of this is that our future relationship with the EU will be just as readily ignored as our activities as a member. They said Brexit would make us isolated, self absorbed and insular but it seems that was always the case and there are no signs of that changing.
As ever the details will be delegated to officials and civil servants while our establishment politics drifts further into its cycle of decline, unable to usefully influence external events making us entirely passive and reactive to events rather than self-interestedly engaged.
