1/ I'm surprised (and somewhat disappointed) that Twitter doesn't do much to nudge conversations into better directions. They have a lot of power to do good, but they don't use it.
2/ AFAIK, the closest Twitter gets to encouraging specific types of content is offering free audience analytics (analytics.twitter.com). One of the pages is called "Audience Insights," but no real insights are offered.
3/ Thoughts on my Insights page:
- follower graph sucks: broken y-axis, the increases look wrong, & no clear relationship between my tweets & my follower count.
- topics in the "Interests" section aren't unique enough to be actionable.
- Gender & Income aren't actionable, either.
4/ Insights that would actually be useful:
- when are people engaged? E.g. should I stop posting at 1am?
- what kind of content resonates? Articles? Comments on articles? Startup lessons? Fortune cookie tweets? Dad jokes?
- are GIFs good, or do people find them annoying?
- etc
5/ Also, why doesn't Twitter offer tweet-specific suggestions?? E.g.:
- "Your draft has a lot of swear words. Your chances of getting unfollowed/blocked = 8x higher"
- "you're posting an article w/o a preview. Including quotes or images from articles increases readership by 84%"
6/ I don't think Twitter should be overbearing, but I do think occasional nudges would be great, and would increase both engagement and civil dialogue.

I'd love to see Twitter (or someone else) build a "social media copilot."

From a founder perspective, the seed stage ecosystem isn't optimized if you 1) lack strong professional pedigree, 2) lack warm intros, AND 3) lack any traction. If you have 1 of those things it's easier, & 2+ is much easier.

From seed VC perspective: valuations aren't optimal.😅
From both perspectives: given the pace of fundraising, the number of startups, and the number of seed investors, it's very hard to develop real relationships with people before committing to multi-year partnerships.

1/ This weekend, there was a good discussion about founder/VC relationships. Several great investors discussed the value of getting to know founders while many founders wondered if building relationships was a waste of time.

To help, here's data from the @SusaVentures family..
@SusaVentures 2/ In the last ~7 years we've made 93 investments. Of those:
- 68 (73%) were founders we had just met
- 10 (11%) were founders we had known for 1-12 mo
- 6 (6%) were founders we had known for 2-4 years
- 9 (10%) were founders we had known for 5+ years
@SusaVentures 3/ While this is a sample size of one fund, my takeaway is that building relationships is valuable. Specifically, my partners & I had known the founders of 11% of co's for 1-12 mo. Given how few people we know relative to all of the founders in the world, this is a huge fraction.

3/ IMO this is why startups can succeed against all odds: founders are consumed by their missions, and for every resource and technique they find, they ask "can this help me achieve my goal?" That kind of single-minded dedication is very effective & very hard to compete against.

its 1am, youre stumbling out of the bar or show. what do you want? do you want to wait outside some asinine truck for a $12 deconstructed grilled cheese with avacado relish that takes 20 goddamned minutes? or do you want 5 no bullshit grilled cheeses stacked in wax paper for $5?

I've had some folks ask for tips on how to moderate a panel event, so here's a thread!

Note that this is based on my experiences moderating and participating on panels at meetups and info events in the tech industry.
Before you agree to moderate a panel, look at the make up of the panel participants. Are you yet another white person on an all-white panel? Or yet another man on an all-male panel?

If that's the case, tell the organizers that needs to be fixed or you won't participate.
If you've been asked to moderate, that means you have a lot of power in this situation, and you need to use it to help empower other people. This applies both to deciding if you should moderate, as well as helping the participants during the event.

Twitter has made a huge positive impact on my life. Lots of people complain about it, so I wanted to write some notes about how I use it.

Love to hear others' strategies too.
I will unabashedly say this at the outset: my Twitter feed is filled with wonder and surprise and delight.
Intellectually, it feels collectively like having Nobel laureates in all disciplines hanging out in the tea room just down the hall. I can pop in whenever I like, hear them noodling, occasionally contribute myself.
