NEW: NEW: We delve into how a new Trump immigration policy was supposed to help improve massive court backlogs, but is actually doing the opposite. With @kristinacooke and @readelev reut.rs/2UI5DFb
As of early September there are now more than 42,000 migrants that have been sent back to Mexico to wait out US court dates, but putting an international border between migrants and their hearings has lead to confusion and errors that have serious consequences for people’s cases
Despite the concerns the government is doubling down on the so-called “migrant protection protocols” - opening massive tents courts at two ports in Texas that could start hearing cases as early as this week
The MPP cases are now swamping courts in San Diego and El Paso, where we found a significant percentage of the case backlogs are from ‘MPP’ cases. Our data analysis found judges there scheduled for an average of 32 cases per day between Jan-July this year, with one booked for 174
I interviewed a Nicaraguan family who was never taken to court in San Diego, even though they showed up at the Mexican side of the border - as instructed - at 4:30 am. They got new hearing b/c they had a lawyer, but other migrants in the same boat that day were ordered deported
