This NYTimes story is stupid in a way that only social media is stupid. I mean, taking the stupid that is social media and making a story about it.
nytimes.com/2019/09/10/sty…
Whenever you tweet something, people will jump on you and exclaim "How dare you tweet that!!!??!!!". This doesn't mean anything. It could be something simple like "I like kittens" and people will attack you for supporting the pet industry, that you should adopt adult cats instead
This is especially true of anything "education" related, because it's a topic full of emotion ("think of the children!!") rather than logic. Anybody attempting to bring critical thinking into a discussion on education will be attacked.
Of course AltSchool only had billionaires like Zuckerberg investing in it -- mere millionaires don't have enough money to invest in emotional projects and would demand a reasonable chance to get a return on investment.
So the question for social media is that you can either be the sort of person who says things that causes all your friends to cheer, or you can be the sort of person that sometimes challenges your friends prejudices, that sometimes makes them angry, who sometimes gets attacked.
