An awful indictment of 3 years of UK government and politics that the best we can do is choose between economically damaging no-deal, politically damaging no Brexit, or leaving to go to what is more or less an EU holding bay while we decide what to do next
It is the absence of any kind of vision or plan for the UK in Brexit talks and beyond that has shocked those in other countries most. They didn't realise the persistence of the amateur spirit in the UK psyche would extend to our most important challenge in a generation
Add in obsessive secrecy, a fragile constitution, hung Parliaments combined with a failure to recognise attitudes to the EU always split the parties, and Prime Ministerial advisors determined to show who's boss and you have the almost perfect storm that we see.
