Elizabeth May made a false claim at the debate last night. She said: "There is no queue for refugees" in response to Scheer's assertion that illegal border crossers jump the queue. May was wrong, not Scheer.
Rather than fact-checking the person who made the false claim, May, this reporter finds an activist disguised as as "expert" to say the opposite. This is false. There IS a queue for refugees. In fact, there are at least 3 distinct queues that illegal border crossers jump.
1. The UN refugee resettlement program. Canada selects 50,000 UN refugees/year, from a list of millions. Asylum seekers jump past the UN queue and come straight to Canada, making ppl in UN camps wait longer.
2. IRB waitlist. Once an asylum seeker makes a refugee claim in Canada, they join a backlog of cases. Right now, there are 77k ppl in the backlog, waiting years in limbo to have their case heard. This is a queue, where legitimate refugees wait alongside those w/ bogus claims.
3. Refugee resettlement orgs. Canada welcomes 50k UN refugees/yr. Another 50k self-selected asylum seekers also come. Resettlement orgs have limited resources & cannot help everyone, therefore, legitimate refugees are stuck waiting in queue while bogus claimants get help.
Not only did Global get it wrong, they called up the CPC and asked if "Scheer knew his claim about queue-jumping was inaccurate." Imagine the ignorance it takes to call someone up to state as fact that they are wrong, when it's you who clearly doesn't understand immigration.
What a pathetic excuse for journalism.
