There's plenty of debate as to regional versus global value chains in academic literature, but generally having no deal with neighbouring countries in terms of tariffs, data, and movement of workers is going to be a disincentive to investment as we have seen
Easy to make trade and investment policy all about gimmicks, negotiating agreements of limited economic value, trumpeting particular areas of investment. Somewhat harder to focus on what you can achieve with different policy tools including FTAs.

The Government's obvious Brexit incoherence and incompetence needs to be exposed. They want a Queens Speech or an election, contradictory. They want a deal but won't let Parliament debate Brexit, contradictory. Their Brexit ideas have been rejected repeatedly by the EU.
Whatever the way Brexit is going to get solved, it isn't going to be solved by this chaotic administration ducking and weaving from Parliamentary scrutiny, and then blaming Parliament for wanting to scrutinise.
As has been said many times, it is as if the Johnson administration has taken all the worst things the May government did, and decided to do them at double speed. Which means he's failed spectacularly within 2 months.

So I finally had time to read the full Supreme Court judgement - not a constitutional law expert but seems to me in the clear line of judgements restricting monarchy powers and favouring Parliament going back hundreds of years supremecourt.uk/cases/docs/uks…
It was this history of Parliamentary supremacy which used to be a fundamental tenet of Euroscepticism, the belief that because the ECJ could overrule UK decisions this was not in keeping with the way the UK system had developed. Was a strong case.
So it would be perfectly consistent for supporters of Brexit to say that the judgement of the Supreme Court was actually in keeping with their reasoning for leaving the EU. Ok, they could say, we're leaving, but on this occasion the government went too far... but no...

So what should Parliament do with their time on Brexit and trade (there are many other things they should do including passing the Domestic Abuse Bill)?

In no particular order:

1/ Ask for details of UK proposals to break Brexit logjam... cont
(if UK proposals confidential ask how they are supposed to be supported by Parliament)

2/ Ask gov why there's an information campaign about leaving EU with no-deal on Oct 31 when there's legislation against this

3/ Push Gov on arrangements for scrutiny trade agreements if trade bill not returning, in particular ask as a matter of urgency for gov priorities with regard to US trade deal (shouldn't be confidential, US published months ago)
4/ Debate on potential US trade agreement

Air boxing by top #UK officials is amazing. Who punching at? Unlike in London, #Brexit never been much fight in Brussels, more lament. When some urged penalty in financial settlement, EU ignored & just tabbed up #'s. Citizen rights a 2-way street. Other stuff mainly logistical..
Point again is not to take any side, but merely point out Brussels has had consistent principles, goals & negotiating positions from the start. London still has no consensus on final objective. No one I know in #EU has advocated for "no deal" but some in #UK actually do that...
Have had many many long conversations w/ top London colleagues. Am very conscious of all arguments & concerns on #UK side, incl over Northern Ireland. But even in no deal scenario, #UK will end up facing exact same choice on future relationship w/ EU as now, but w/o transition...
