A reminder that the Harper government lost in unprecedented ways before the Supreme Court of Canada under McLachlin's leadership. But hahaha just a joke right? researchgate.net/publication/31…
The legal community is vigilant about judicial independence, and in the name of that principle is hawkish about criticisms leveled against individual judges. But judicial independence is a two-way street, and maybe caution - even in retirement - is warranted to preserve it.

OK, I'm gonna live-tweet my skim of the Liberal platform.

First big ticket item is raising the personal income tax exemption to $15K. This one gets an A+ from me, feeding both the fiscal conservative part of my brain and the 'we should help people that need it most' part. 1/n
I'm gonna skip commenting on the comparisons the Liberals are making of themselves to the Conservatives. Some of the comments in the platform are fair, others have the usual partisan skew/spin. 2/n
Next item is the First-Time Home Buyer Incentive. This I don't like. Despite the endless rhetoric about how hard it is for millenials to buy, I don't get targeted subsidies for heated markets, received by people who have to be in a good position to qualify to start with. D-. 3/n

But the idea that the degree of party discipline we see in Canada is required for this is fucking nonsense. /2
We've transformed 'shared values' into pitiful obedience at the feet of Dear Leader.

We've transformed the presentation of a platform into treating any and all disagreement or dissent as treasonous.

It's not party discipline but cult-like faith and obedience. /3

Reading the Ethics Commissioner's report while on vacation, because that's how I roll. Three things stood out: 1) nine relevant people could not be fully forthcoming due to cabinet confidences. Nine. The idea that JWR is the problem doesn't fly. 1/n
2) PM told the Ethics Commish he did not direct Wernick to speak to JWR or use the 'one way or another' language. So the former clerk of the PC took it upon himself to have a meeting with JWR and use language that could be reasonably interpreted as an implicit threat. Incredible.
3) The involvement of, and attempt to involve, former SCC justices to apply further pressure on JWR is - as others have noted - a whole other concern here. Time for a broader discussion about what former judges involve themselves in this country.
