Trump thinks Australia wrongly interfered in the 2016 election by transmitting information on the Trump campaign to the DOJ. So he's asking Australia to submit more information to the FBI that he can use as part of his 2020 election campaign. Makes sense.

Worth stressing: although the call with the Australian PM raises concerns about Trump's entanglement of personal and state interests, as well as his belief in nutty conspiracy theories, Trump's request to Morrison was not, by itself, improper.
And since the call with Morrison was restricted to a small group of aides, the fact it leaked to the NYT anyway makes me think the White House may have leaked this strategically, to plant a narrative of "See, asking foreign leaders for help with investigations is normal & fine!"
