Ten reasons why it matters when dictators are elected to the U.N. Human Rights Council:

1. Tyrannies use their UNHRC seat as false badges of international legitimacy — to legitimize their unelected regimes, cover up their crimes, and demoralize human rights dissidents at home.
2. When dictators dominate, the UNHRC appoint officials like Alfred de Zayas, who visited Venezuela only to post propaganda photos denying mass hunger caused by the regime’s failed policies — even as hospitals there are filled with starving children.

3. Dictators name folks like Idriss Jazairy—who as Algerian ambassador drafted a Code of Conduct to muzzle UN human rights experts—to be a UN human rights expert himself. He has painted the regimes of Russia, Sudan & Syria as victims of Western sanctions.

4. Dictators will name regimes like Saudi Arabia as Chair of the UN Human Rights Council panel that selects top officials—including the UN expert on women's rights—who shape international human rights standards and report on violations worldwide.

5. Dictators will use the U.N. Human Rights Council to roll out the red carpet for tyrants like Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro to address a special assembly & deliver a 40-minute propaganda speech, and then reward him with a standing ovation. unwatch.org/despite-gross-…
6. Dictators on the UN Human Rights Council will reelect & honor its longest-serving official: Jean Ziegler, co-founder & 2002 recipient of the "Muammar Qaddafi Human Rights Prize." UN Watch was the only one to take the floor and call out this disgrace. unwatch.org/17206-2/
7. Dictators will use the UNHRC to appoint Hamas supporters like Richard Falk—who was condemned by the UK 3 times for antisemitism, and by Ban Ki-moon for his "preposterous and insulting" 9/11 conspiracy theories—as their "Special Rapporteur on Palestine."

8. If the U.N. elects Iraq, Libya, Mauritania, Venezuela & Sudan, the Human Rights Council will continue to grant impunity to many of the world's worst regimes, adopting 0 resolutions on abuses in Algeria, China, Cuba, Egypt, Gaza, Iraq, Pakistan, Russia, Turkey, Zimbabwe....
9. Dictators allow the UNHRC to hire anti-Israel radicals like Dr. Grietje Baars as the 'impartial' author of key chapters of inquiry reports like the Goldstone Report — knowing she was a Hamas backer & ex-Europe spox of IHH terrorist-backed Gaza flotilla.

10. Dictators form natural alliances with ant-Western NGOs like Amnesty, whose UN rep befriended & defended Qaddafi regime rep Najat Al-Hajjaji as she won such key posts as Chair of the UNHRC & Chair of the Durban II world conference on racism prepcom. unwatch.org/from-the-archi…
