@UNHumanRights This fake resolution—a bid to stifle a real investigation— was not only sponsored by the regimes of Algeria, Iran, Nicaragua, Turkey & PLO, but—as I discovered in the document properties—was actually written by Venezuela itself: the Maduro regime's #2 UNHRC rep, Félix Peña Ramos.
@UNHumanRights @ONUVEGinebra The resolution title—"Strengthening cooperation & technical assistance in the field of human rights in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela"—is an indicator that it's not about scrutiny for abuses. Rather, this text only seeks to forestall the real investigation we're demanding.
@UNHumanRights @ONUVEGinebra Strangely for a so-called human rights resolution, the preamble seeks to strengthen Maduro's regime by "Reaffirming respect for principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, sovereign equality of States, non-intervention & non-interference in internal affairs of States..."
@UNHumanRights @ONUVEGinebra Instead of holding Venezuela's oppressive regime to account, the resolution repeatedly tries to blame Western sanctions on regime officials: "Recognizing that unilateral coercive measures are exacerbating the effects of the economic crisis, and thus the humanitarian situation..."
@UNHumanRights @ONUVEGinebra The resolution promotes the notion that Maduro is a victim:
"To reach a peaceful, democratic solution to the current situation in Venezuela, it is necessary that the people of Venezuela themselves find it without any military, security or foreign intelligence interference..."
@UNHumanRights @ONUVEGinebra Instead of condemning Maduro's abuses of human rights, it falsely praises the brutal regime: "Recognizing the political willingness shown by the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to cooperate with the High Commissioner and the Office of the High Commissioner..."
@UNHumanRights @ONUVEGinebra Instead of condemning the regime, it calls for "technical cooperation and support to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela” & “welcomes the decision of Venezuela to gradually authorize humanitarian assistance from the United Nations & other international organizations...”
@UNHumanRights @ONUVEGinebra The Iran-sponsored resolution also "Welcomes the efforts of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela" to implement UN human rights recommendations & calls for the Maduro regime to “continue to collaborate with the mechanism", falsely implying that they ever cooperated.
@UNHumanRights @ONUVEGinebra The resolution paints Maduro as a victim, “Expressing concern at the imposition of extraterritorial unilateral coercive measures on the Republic of Venezuela, which exacerbate further the effects of the economic crisis & thus the humanitarian situation of the Venezuelan people..”
