There is no denying that history has been dominated by stories about men, and by men, and this winter, we’re shining a (candle)light on women and their stories. A rectangular stand holds a collection of different sized candles in front of a tapestry decorated with embroidered leaves
This autumn sees the centenary of two political milestones in the fight for gender equality – the election of the first female Member of Parliament, Nancy Astor, and the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act. Nancy Astor stands surrounded by a crowd of men
To mark this centenary, we turn to one of the most important modernist authors – #VirginiaWoolf – and her seminal works, A Room of One’s Own and Three Guineas:
po.st/Woolf A portrait of Virginia Woolf looking to one side
As a woman, I have no country.
As a woman I want no country.
As a woman, my country is the world.

Three Guineas #VirginiaWoolf
Both of #VirginiaWoolf’s texts powerfully articulate a woman’s right to intellectual freedom and financial independence, and with them, we’ll be reflecting on how far we’ve come, as well as acknowledging the need to push the conversation for gender equality forwards.
Women are powerful and dangerous.
#AudreLorde

Alongside #VirginiaWoolf, we’ll also be celebrating those women who have made a difference with @TheFourthChoir:

From Queen Elizabeth I and Lady Phyll, to Sappho and Sarah Bernhardt, Nina Simone and Lyra McKee – classical choir @TheFourthChoir, actor @AnnetteBadland1 and opera singer Dame Ann Murray celebrate the women who have changed the world through music and stories in the Playhouse. Portraits of women ovelapping each other on a yellow background with red stripes framing the border
@thefourthchoir @AnnetteBadland1 But we won’t stop there – in a season inspired by Shakespeare’s very own She Wolf, Margaret of Anjou, the Shakespeares of today will pen letters to the forgotten women of the past... A painting of a woman obscured by letters
Women whose sensational stories aren’t being told – @Wikipedia has acknowledged its own gender bias, with biographies of women numbering only 17% of all biographies on its site.
@Wikipedia In Notes to the Forgotten She Wolves, we’ll give candlelight to those women who have shaped our history, even though their stories have remained in the dark. A woman dressed in robes holds a candle up to her face
@Wikipedia As well as performances, readings, concerts and storytelling, we will also be exploring female leadership and power structures in our conference Women & Power on the Early Modern Stage. A woman stands on the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse stage surrounded by candles
Hear from scholars and join in discussions, as together, we debate issues of gender, sexuality and power, and how Early Modern writers grappled with female authority:
