Trump is sending out thuggish GOP reps to disrupt congressional proceedings, his toady AG is threatening to put the president's enemies in jail, and the Democrats are just placidly moving forward with their plan to do some public hearings about Ukraine and then take a vote
Democrats have every advantage - Trump is unpopular, the public supports impeachment, and in many polls, supports removal as well, and the president has committed so many crimes that you can't swing a stick without hitting one. But they need to REACT and ADAPT
It is not politically wise to set up a plan months in advance and never deviate from it no matter what happens! It just gives the opposition every opportunity to eat you alive while you never even bother trying stop them!
Maybe the problem with DC is that adaptable strategic thinking has been completely replaced by the rote application of stupid pundit aphorisms like "Don't get distracted" and "Keep it simple" and "Don't overreach" - the Carville-ization of political rhetoric
