Such a mess. The EU delaying the decision complicates parliament's response to the election. They can't sign up to it until they know the extension will give it time to take place.
Johnson combining election support with an agreement to force his deal through beforehand also removes the point of the election. Labour therefore has to reject the request on Monday.
So many people thinking short-sightedly, or self-interestedly, or not at all.
Only real solution I can see is for Labour to put a counter proposal - for an election on a given date, to be voted through on November 1st when the current no-deal threat passes.
Be good to get on the front foot about it, make a significant speech - the offer to Johnson, a demand to go to the country, insistence that no-deal is ruled out, but in a detailed falsifiable way, not as some kind of abstract principle.
That disentangles the election from the deal and sends a clear signal to EU of the need for an extension until at least Jan 31st. But to say it's suboptimal is an understatement.
They're all so dreadful.
