@RThienprayoon's tweet about this award resonated with me, though perhaps for different reasons. Like her, I had a tough early career step in #hpm #hapc. The first program chief my hospital had ever had, but isolated from a collegial network and with little local support. 1/7
Add in a late start to fellowship, and then 2 years of #miscarriage, #recurrentpregnancyloss and secondary #infertility. Those experiences made me a much better person/doctor/leader/human being, but let's be honest, weren't great for my early career leadership development. 2/7
Early #workingmomlife was a blur of hard work, sleep deprivation, disenfranchised grief, and lessons learned. The transformation was happening, but I couldn't see it. Not until I landed in a more supportive environment. #womeninmedicine 3/7
But then I DID land @BPTHOSP with the most amazing leader, boss, mentor, friend @ArgentoMD, and other senior leadership support with @MikeIvyMD. And they nurtured me and eased me out of that cocoon. 4/7
Mentors found me, mentors who saw the spark of promise and gave me opportunities, sponsored me for projects, and provided specific feedback so I could grow (and continue to grow). 5/7
THEN @AAHPM decided to revise the award criteria to "5 to 10 years in the field" which reduced the #genderbias of age-based awards and the reproductive years, and gave the gift of time to those of us who didn't soar with the first flight from the nest. 6/7
#heforshe #sheforshe
So for me this award, while wonderful, is about the people who have mentored me, the environment that helps each of us flourish, the awesome dedication of our specialty society to be inclusive and equitable, the power of ongoing connection. #gratitude #womeninmedicine 7/7 End
