So I heard supporting the Hong Kong freedom protests compared to being pro-#GamerGate.

Being pro-Hong Kong and pro-GamerGate do have something in common.
For me, what the two have in common, is the OBVIOUSNESS of ethically right side.

I ALWAYS think about things before taking a side, even when it seems prima facie clear that one side is right. In some cases, it doesn’t take a lot of thought.
There just is no pro-China case to made, ethically. You could at most make a case for regrettable non-interference, since Hong Kong is a Chinese territory. Similarly, there just is no anti-GG case to be made that isn’t fundamentally dishonest.
If you call GG a “hate movement” or “harassment movement” you can pretend to be ethically against it. Similarly, you can call China a “people’s republic” or a “worker’s paradise” and pretend to be ethically for it.
represent things and pick that side.
But I think everyone knows that anyone mounting pro-China arguments is lying to you and possibly to themselves. They all reduce to

“Fuck Hong Kong, because if China isn’t happy, we make less money.”
“We do have freedom of speech. But at times, there are ramifications for the negative that can happen when you're not thinking about others, when you only think about yourself. So many people could have been harmed, not only financially but physically, emotionally, spiritually."
