RIP Vladimir Bukowsky, a dissident whose moral compass never failed him. My condolences to his sister and to everyone fighting for truth against power, for whom he was a guiding star. @BukovskyCenter
Bukovsky's dire premonitions about the future of Russia were validated when they cut off his access to the KGB archives in 1993, something a nation intent on coming to terms with its past wouldn't do.
A post-Soviet Russia truly interested in reform, on purging its dark history would have embraced a dissident like Bukovsky, the way the Czechs did Havel. Instead he was shunned, and that told us everything. We just didn't understand it yet.
You can honor Bukovsky's legacy by reading his works. To Build a Castle and Judgment in Moscow are essential. You will also understand more about the USSR, evil, & totalitarianism than 99% of Russia pundits today!
My new WaPo article on Soviet dissident Vladimir Bukovsky, who died Sunday night. He understood better than anyone that you could not negotiate with evil. washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/…
"Bukovsky saw the signs that the rest of us missed. He declined to return to Russia, realizing that a nation that refused to disavow its brutal past was charting a course to return to it."
