Thread. BIG NEWS the Voluntary Voting System Guidelines 2.0 #cybersecurity working group is going to recommend NO #Wi-Fi & NO #Internet capability for #voting systems. This does not include #epollbooks but does include tabulators & election management systems. @secureourvotes
This is not a done deal, but it is a good step! The working group recommendations will be given to the Technical Guidelines Development Committee this Fri & they (the TGDC) may vote on these recs (could be up/down) then (supposedly) they go to the EAC for a public comment period.
Keep in mind that even if the EAC adopts these guidelines - they are still VOLUNTARY. States can choose to disregard them, or follow some & not others. Also the recommendation is not for the Wi-Fi capability to be removed, but instead permanently disabled due to cost of removal.
The #barcode recommendations were (for reasons I don't understand) taken out of the #cybersecurity working group & given to another working group.
There's not currently a recommendation for a ban on #barcodes & #QR in voting systems in the Voluntary Voting System Guidelines 2.0 #VVSG, but if there is public pressure against barcodes during the new public comment period the way there was against #WiFi maybe it could happen.
There's a fairly good rec to prevent ballot-marking devices from printing on paper ballots after they are cast. "After a voter casts their ballot, the voting system must not be able to physically print in the ballot selection area regardless of software and hardware updates."
The language above is moving forward. #SMARTelections recommended a completely separate path for printer & scanner, but the rec was not adopted due to a stated need to print a unique identifying number on the ballot. @rad_atl recommended that be done with a mechanical stamp.
@rad_atl @threadreaderapp unroll please.
@rad_atl @threadreaderapp These guidelines are going to be voluntary & old insecure systems will remain certified - So it is still important to get these requirements passed in fed legislation that will be mandatory for all states to follow. #SAFEact is currently the best #ElectionSecurity legislation.
