So overt questions of regulating energy in capitalism are legit terrain for a partisan empirics of energy research. But are we aware how much we enjoy our own more private ideologies? Reactions to @UKLabour energy policy are fascinating.
Responses to a #GreenNewDeal scale home retrofit programme "I already paid to insulate my home [individual responsibility trope] why should I pay for my neighbour's loft insulation [feckless socialist/free stuff trope] even before the finance mechanism is announced.
The enjoyment of ideology is clear; how the individual responsibility narrative re-enforces the individual's 'ethical me' narrative. Therefore any challenge to that is definitionally 'unethical'
Those (including me) advocating for a #GreenNewDeal #retrofit have not yet contended with this. We assume the virtue and perfection of our policy solution will prevail over 'their' ideology. We are ourselves enjoying our own ideology. But this enjoyment is expensive..
It is expensive because we need to retrofit the homes of our ideological opponents to meet our goals. They will not just be letting a builder through the door of their home, they also have to let a policy through the door that they view as illigitimate and unethical.
This is why any retrofit policy coming from #GeneralElection2019 needs a people and place led strategy for adoption. @NEF and @powellds taught me about this. This means balancing a state led programme with local solutions. Building up trades, local leaders and delivery bodies.
The reason we need #city level solutions for retrofit is not because #cities are magical geographical units, but because they represent an empirical, lived reality that might overcome ideological enjoyment on both sides of the political spectrum. So #GreenNewDeal #fullemployment
