THREAD: a quick tour through one Year 10 pupil’s English book...

If you walked into my classroom and picked up a book, what would you see?
Marking with highlighters both in and out of lesson for speed and efficiency
A relentless focus on spelling and punctuation hi
Tried and tested prompts to develop analysis and explanation
Pupils monitoring and reflecting on their own learning
Pages without any marking
Cornell notes to organise new information
Dual coding to support memory
Model paragraphs created by me and as a class
Over people’s resources because why reinvent the wheel? @pixlenglish @siancumming1
Bag loads of challenging Tier 2 vocab including unpicking of etymology
Self-marked starter for five recall quizzes to support memory
Reciprocal reader as a consistent approach to reading to support inference and build independence
Centralised sheets for standardised assessments to support moderation
Pupils responding to feedback (and, crucially, writing more than I have)
Prior knowledge being highlighted and built on wherever possible
Focus on the ‘big ideas’ and my faith that my subject matter is the hook - no other gimmicks needed.
Use of marking codes and whole class feedback (but you won’t see the sheet because I put it on the projector to save photocopying)
