Yesterday @SenatorMenendez asked the Senate for Unanimous Consent to recognize the Armenian Genocide, perpetrated by the Turkish government. "The United States government cannot sit idly by and let the truth of Genocide be silenced." (thread)

2/ Fresh from a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and President Trump, Sen. @LindseyGrahamSC objected, "not to sugar coat history or try to rewrite it but to try to focus on the present."

3/ Menendez responded: "In our desire to see Turkey become that which we would want it to be, which it is not under President Erdoğan, we continue to become enablers of the type of actions that are undemocratic..."
4/ Menendez continued: "Are we so afraid to stand up for history and the truth? Are we so afraid about Turkey? Who is the superpower? I am beginning to wonder. Because every time Turkey threatens to do something, we cower...
5/ "... I will not cease to continue coming to the Senate Floor to prick the conscience of this body, and to reveal who supports recognizing the Armenian Genocide and who does not. Otherwise, these words about ‘never again’ are just hollow.”

6/ This is an issue we've been covering for years, btw. The continued U.S. government capitulation to Turkey on this is a disgrace.

2/ Holmes arrived in Kyiv in August 2017, their work focused in part on anti-corruption efforts, straining then-Amb. Yovanovitch's relationship w/ Pres Poroshenko and Prosecutor General Lutsenko "who resisted fully empowering truly independent anti-corruption institutions."
3/ "Beginning in March 2019, the situation at the Embassy and in Ukraine changed dramatically," when policies supporting democratic reform and resistance to Russian aggression "became overshadowed by a political agenda" pushed by Giuliani and others w direct channel to WH.

POTUS continues to lie and mislead about the testimonies of diplomats Bill Taylor and George Kent.

At a rally in Louisiana, he just said: “How about when they asked these two ‘Never Trumpers’ what exactly do you think you impeach him for? And they stood there like, what?” 1/
2/ It’s true that Rep. John Ratcliffe, R-Tx — perhaps demonstrating why the GOP-controlled Senate conveyed to the WH that they wouldn’t confirm him as DNI — asked them: "Are either of you here today to assert there was an impeachable offense in that call? Shout it out. Anyone?”
3/ And, yes, neither weighed in on impeachment.

That’s because they were there as fact witnesses, not pro-impeachment voices or legal analysts.

The question was nonsensical and citing it as evidence is mendacious.

Yesterday someone asked me what conservatives like @RadioFreeTom and @JonahNRO mean when they use the phrase "limited government." Does the cliche have any meaning? Don't we all believe in it (just like how no one is Pro-War). I did some digging and here's my answer: 1/
This ngram suggests the term emerged nearly outta nowhere ~1930. I haven't looked at sources, but I'm almost certain it was used by American Liberty League types to oppose the New Deal. Ie, as Americans, we believe in limited government, just no one had put it that way before. 2/
It seems like Ike used it, too, but Kennedy/Nixon backed off it. Bill Buckley used "limited govt" in God & Man, but only once in passing. In the 50th anniversary edition, he mentioned it in the preface right away. It had become a standard cliche. 3/

06/01/2019 - 78 years ago today, the longest-serving #UnitedStates #President, #Franklin D. #Roosevelt (#FDR) addressed the 77th #Congress with his "#Four #Freedoms" speech with the intent to shift #US #foreign #policy from that of #neutrality to #interventionist.
#FDR promoted the idea that the people of the world, in all nations, shared entitlement to four freedoms: that of the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want and the freedom from fear.
#FDR is arguably one of the most 'successful' #US Presidents. Some would argue that on the basis of his numerous social policies such as 'the New Deal'. Others, however, would argue that his role during the second world war was more prevalent to his success & everlasting legacy.
