Chairman Schiff: "Let me get to the top line here, Ambassador Sondland."

That's the White House meeting being a quid pro quo in exchange for investigations.

"Correct," Sondland said.

Q: And everybody knew it.
A: Correct.
Schiff goes through the statutory language, reciting the elements of bribery: an "official act" in return for a "thing of value."

This for that.
Devastating testimony by Ambassador Sondland:

"[Ukrainian President Zelensky] had to announce the investigations. He didn't actually have to do them."

Trump insists he requested these investigations because of his concerns about corruption in Ukraine, not for political gain.

Fiona Hill, with a thick British accent, begins her opening statement by emphasizing her nonpartisan credentials and calling herself an "American by choice."

"I have no interest in advancing the outcome of your inquiry in any particular direction, except toward the truth."
Hill tells more of her family history, building upon a theme of witnesses emphasizing how their families confronted fascism:

"During the Second World War, other members of my
family fought to defend the free world from fascism
alongside American soldiers, sailors, and airmen."
I am getting some blowback on the "thick British accent" line.

No offense intended on a wonderful accent.

I've been described in print as having a "rapid-fire New York accent," and have been told by Londoners that my Jersey is quite heavy.

Opening statement of David Holmes, a career public service officer who overheard the Trump-Sondland call:

"I am not a political appointee or engaged in politics in any way," Holmes said, describing himself as "apolitical," like many of the career officials who have testified.
Also like many other witness, Holmes effusively praises Marie Yovanovitch, whom Trump attacked on his call with Ukrainian President Zelensky.

Holmes testified that their anti-corruption work became "overshadowed by a political agenda promoted" by Rudy Giuliani.
Holmes moves onto Giuliani's smear campaign:

"Mr. Giuliani and others made a number of public statements critical of Ambassador Yovanovitch, questioning her integrity and calling for her removal from office."
