Gawker lost legally, but it had a dramatic impact on today’s media environment and in some sense won culturally. It was a precursor to a certain style of woke Brooklyn journalism, which was later inflated by capital markets and now feels derivative (eg Daily Beast). /1
Gawker also presaged a certain style of anti-establishment journalism, which migrated to the populist right and morphed into insurgent citizen-journalism. @Cernovich in 2014-2017 could be seen as a descendent. For all its faults, Gawker’s chip on the shoulder seemed genuine. /2
There’s more to say on these thing (including the later Vekselberg investment which may have been a precursor to Russian meddling?). Only mentioning this because I haven’t seen Gawker’s influence acknowledged in #media #journalism & it may help us understand today’s media realm.
