This is easily explained.
Under the Soviets, Russia embraced communism, often seen as the far left of the political spectrum.
Under Putin, they swung to the far right, fascism.
The hitch is this: Both extremes embraced totalitarianism.
Putin's fascism, modeled on the philosophy of Ivan Ilyin, appeals to America's far right wing.
Stalin's communism didn't.
@TimothyDSnyder and
@mashagessen wrote fabulous books explaining Russia's transformation.
I don't think it's possible to make accurate pronouncements about today's politics without understanding history, particularly pre-1954 versus post-1954.
Brown v. Board changed everything.
This is particularly true given America's history. We've already had two oligarchies
💠pre-Civil war, when power was largely concentrated in the hands of a few wealthy white slaveowners and
💠 the age of robber barons.
MAGA means "let's go back!"
By the "age of robber barons" I mean before the New Deal and rise of regulatory agencies, when [white men] could cheat. They could launder money, manipulate markets, etc.
