It looks like a crushing defeat for Corbyn, but now with Brexit all but guaranteed, perhaps the old communist is finally fulfilling the Comintern's mandate to bring down the British empire!
I hope the Democrats hear the message from the UK this time. Avoiding the biggest issue with wild promises of controversial changes when people want sanity & stability is the way to get four more years of Trump.
I'll follow up on this at length in an article, but I've already written warning variations of it many times. If the response to radicalism is more radicalism on the other side, eventually only the most extreme are happy.
A secondary effect is more people hold more extreme views as they become normalized. The ideological and tribal windows don't stay fixed. Some drop out, others radicalize in order to participate. The middle vanishes.
This isn't a matter of trivially equating the extreme candidates on each side. Of course Trump is worse, and a clear and present danger. But he's not the bottom, either, and it's a huge mistake to think he is.
The GOP is now the Trump party. They are abandoning all territory once occupied by Republicans (at least in principle): National security/Defense, fiscal conservatism, moral behavior, etc. The Dems can take what they want in the middle instead of ignoring it for wild promises.
An indicator how Americans still cannot comprehend Trump & Trumpism is this question: Why do you think he will leave in 2024? Because everyone before him did? Because the GOP would finally stand up to him? Are you willing to risk your democracy on that bet?
Trump reelected will be Trumpism unleashed, across the country and the world. Impeachment is essential but unlikely to remove him, leaving 2020 as the best hope to limit the damage. The Dems can follow the Corbyn path of the self-righteous martyr or win.
