Regarding installation of barbed wire fencing to prevent #Rohingya #refugees from leaving their camps, I found the comment by @KellyTClements Deputy High Commissioner of UN Refugee Agency, particularly disturbing. medium.com/@shafiur/caged…
"We’ll try to see how it can be implemented in a way that doesn’t adversely affect the refugee community nor the host". Sounds like there was no objection, yet this is such a backwards and damaging move for the well being and rights of #Rohingya #refugees.
It was exactly this type of pandering to Myanmar authorities by UN agencies that allowed the unfolding of the Rohingya genocide to take place, and now it sounds like they are taking the same approach in Bangladesh.
We thought the #Rohingya genocide was going to stop at the border of Bangladesh. But if there is no strong stance from the UN on the matter of imprisoning refugees behind barbed wire fencing, watchtowers, and restrictions on mobile communications, well this is very bad indeed.
Treating #Rohingya #refugees in such a way is further dehumanisation. No human beings can tolerate such measures imposed on them but we expect 1.1 million Rohingya refugees to accept this quietly?
How can we call for the closure of #Rohingya concentration camps in Myanmar when the biggest concentration camp in the world is being constructed in Bangladesh, with the cooperation of the UN Refugee Agency?
Not allowed to work. Not allowed to get educated. Not allowed to communicate with people outside of their camp. Trapped behind barbed wire. Not allowed to leave. Watched over from towers. We are observing the construction of a concentration camp for 1.1 million people. #Rohingya
What happens to #Rohingya #refugees in #Bangladesh will set a standard for our future. If this barbed wire enclosure is not stopped, we can anticipate a world where millions of people are imprisoned behind barbed wire, indefinitely. Whilst others go about their free lives.
