MPP: Our firm has been providing legal assistance to refugees along the Mexican border since the Regime began implementing its family separation policy 2 years ago, seeking to deter asylum seekers through cruelty. Now we are facing MPP.

My MPP thread.
MPP is the latest turn of cruelty visited on refugee families. Families who plead for asylum are rounded up & deposited en masse on the bridge forced to return to Mexico while they wait on their hearings - a dangerous no go zone according to US officials.

The families are easily targeted by cartel gangsters (thanks to MPP) and placed at risk of being robbed, kidnapped, and worse. Our lawyers are forced to travel to Mexico to meet with our clients at secret locations for safety, a not appealing journey.
We now find ourselves in the Regime's tent courthouse in Laredo, teeming with single mothers and young children, like our clients desperately seeking protection from grave dangers. With one exception - our clients are the only families with legal counsel.
#DontLookAway. Until we dismantle the Regime's illegal & unconscionable asylum policies, we must struggle as best we can to protect children, because MPP is a continuation of asylum policies based on deterrence by targeting innocent children with cruelty:
We shield our MPP family clients while we fight the Regime at the tent by housing them in the relative safety of Monterrey. We need help. Our clients are single mothers with young children who are mostly penniless & would otherwise end up on the streets.
Fighting the Regime in the tents is no easy task. Along with proving a family's seminal asylum claim of fear to return to their country, we also must now litigate the family's fear to return to Mexico, as well as seek entry through bond while their case is litigated - and appeals

Our clients have been assaulted, raped, robbed and kidnapped. The criminals have found refugees returned to Mexico to be easy marks. Dumped as a group at the bridge on the Mexican side, with nowhere to go, they are helpless and easy pickings.

The tent courthouses feel look like family court. Childless adult refugees are assets for the regime's mass-incarcerators & are jailed. Children with a single parent are liabilities, as the children cannot be so easily incarcerated. They are placed in MPP and returned to Mexico. Image

Our 4 year old client was detained by BP on Friday, separated from her aunt, and placed in BP's McAllen Hielera (processing) where she fell sick. Her mother is a refugee living in VT. The child is now in a hospital, but BP won't tell us where. 1/
The child's mother is desperate to be by her side, to participate in her treatment, to be asked for her consent before medicating her child - basic rights afforded to all mothers by law. BP won't even tell the mother why her child is in the hospital. 2/

Buried in a morass of internal reshuffling of component & deputy of components that lift the veil of the immigration bureaucracy are some changes that are not benign.

1/ THREAD: New details on the Trump #remaininmexico #asylum plan out now, and it's so much worse than I was expecting. This is an illegal, immoral, unconscionable human rights disaster in the making. Let's talk about what this is and how it's going to get people killed.
2/ Context: Asylum seekers in Tijuana and other border towns are being "metered" by an illegal system which requires them to take numbers on a list and wait their turn (sometimes months) to lawfully enter the US to seek asylum. This is already bad enough.

3/ Even before Trump, the nativist right was obsessed with the idea of making #CentralAmerican asylum seekers wait outside the US for the many years that it can often take to get these cases to a final hearing. This administration was all too willing to give it a try.

As a fmr immigration attorney let me be unambiguously clear. Crossing a boarder to claim asylum is *not* a crime; no under US or international law. Any child separated from a parent under that pretext is done so in direct contravention to the laws of the USA. ⚖ THREAD Pls RT.
If you came to the US without permission to apply for asylum, youmetjod of entry, whether legal or illegal *should* in no way effect your application process. Illegal entry is not a ground of inadmissibility for asylum applicants.
Unlike many other categories of applicants for immigration benefits, ppl seeking asylum in the US are not barred by having made an illegal entry; for example, sneaked across the U.S. border or overstaying a valid visa (one of the top ways people are in the country illegall).
