Since we started our little adventure in a motorhome I have realised there is an entire community of people, often retired Brits and other people from Northern Europe, taking advantage of FOM to spend their healthy retirement years in warmer climes using our #FOM. #brexit
There are no Schengen visas required at the moment as EU citizens. Many campsites we have come across in France, Portugal and Spain contain long term campers, people either take a permanent pitch and come and go as they like or they take a 6 month pitch over the winter months.
I believe there may be thousands of people enjoying this life of motorhoming and caravanning when they can retire or semi retire. It can be pretty cheap, it’s hassle free and there is even a sense of community amongst the longer term campers that you might not get when working.
Others travel more and choose to move freely between places and countries they want to visit. We have met people who have literally sold all their british possessions, taken their pension income and savings and taken off in their motorhome with no endpoint in mind.
Younger people we have met have simply taken a year or two out to experience the world. Quite often they have a means of continuing to get a small income on the move because they do freelance work which does not depend on location, only a good internet connection.
Sounds interesting doesn’t it? Lots of people approaching retirement might think that sounds fabulous as they struggle down to the shop on a dismal dark and rainy winter day, they could be sitting in a deck chair drinking their morning coffee in the sunshine
Or walking the dog across a lovely Spanish beach or beautiful French countryside. It’s cramped in a motorhome but the ability to enjoy an outdoor lifestyle compensates for that especially when you come across a beauty spot or meet some extremely interesting fellow campers.
Although now during the transition period everything stays the same, it seems such opportunities to travel so freely will very likely be curtailed come 2020. We can only go by what people from third countries experience rules wise atm.
90 days out of 180 is very likely to be the rule that most people will have to work with, though there are other visas available
There is no guarantee that any special arrangements will be made given that the EU27 want reciprocal agreements and the British government are terrified that too many forrins will like the UK and want to stay there!
I think given the attention Tories have paid to hating FOM, getting something special for Brits around this to help pensioners enjoy their healthy retirement years seems like simply a fantasy to me.
Of course you could spend your winter months travelling around the UK but many campsites are shut, you use a lot of power for heating and the worst nightmare is during wet weather. There is nowhere to dry anything. You wrap up and go outside get soaked and then you have to ...
Bring your wet stuff inside a small space. We all know what British weather is like. Motorhoming In British winter is for the toughest people only who don’t mind being bored, cold or wet or all three constantly.
I came across this well thought through blog on the effects of #brexit on this way if life that so many British pensioners are currently enjoying. The year long motorhome adventure could be a thing of the past for Brits. Tragic national self harm!

P.s. the people i have come across are not millionaires or elite middle class. They are by and large normal WC people who did normal jobs their whole lives with modest incomes who have simply figured out how to make their retirement incomes go further!
