To Boris' credit, he's put his finger on the key question.

Fortunately there's an answer. It's a combination of Nokia, Ericsson, Samsung & others, privately financed, wholesale networks using a spectrum royalty payments model rather than the destructive one off spectrum auction.

@NYPostOpinion @brianmcarney @BorisJohnson Keep in mind that is well known in the industry that it's a perfectly good option to go with any combination of Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung (and some others for network elements) for an end to end #5G network. Those are excellent, well known alternatives to #Huawei & ZTE.

So the question Boris is really asking is not so much who else can provide the 'alternative' equipment? We already know that. The real question is who can finance debt laden mobile carriers and subsidise their 5G equipment rollouts?

The only large scale answer to that question is 'Beijing'. They are prepared to finance those mobile carriers and make sure they get the necessary equipment discounts.

The carriers are all debt strapped, crippled by what they forked out over years to maintain monopolies over radio spectrum. That's why they're dependent on China's cheap debt & discount deals. It isn't about technology, it's about money & who will finance a broken business model
