United Nations director general of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) António Vitorino implicated in a 35 million euro Venezuelan corruption scheme.
Case stems from time when he was Spain's ambassador to Venezuela.

The case also involves the former head of the Venezuelan oil company flying to Madrid to testify, then being found dead in his hotel room.

Money was laundered through shell companies & banks in Panama & Switzerland. I'm sure some of this was exposed by the #PanamaPapers & #Swissleaks.
Which have made it easier for investigators to discover the owners of the shell companies!

I'm sure Swampy politicians liked the idea of a corrupt & compromised person running the UN's migration office. Wonder if anyone got paid to make it worse...

He of course denies all the charges...
His political career was derailed in 1997 when he was accused of tax evasion (shell companies?) but he evaded the charges too.
Then got appointed as an EU commissioner before becoming a diplomat.

The money seems to have been moved & stashed in the usual ways. Fictitious invoices to shell companies & then laundered into real estate & cash....
He likely has immunity for any crimes committed while working for the UN but not for his crimes in 2008-2012.
