Many folks have been questioning @RAICESACTION’s manner of protest last night at the debate. Being our sister organization, we stand with them in their decision and their tactics to make people not look away. #DontLookAway
Although last night’s events were uncomfortable, as many have pointed out...we believe it was necessary. Time and time again the issue of immigration has been kicked under the rug or not discussed AT ALL on the debate stage. Last night was no different.
This issue affects millions. It’s not just the border crisis. It’s everything: DACA, family separation, our asylum in shambles, detention, refugees, PoliMigra collaboration...the list goes on.

And people’s lives are at stake.
The lives of many of those who we represent and even some of our own colleagues here at RAICES.

We cannot afford to look away any further.
And because we know the importance of these ISSUES (not just one you can bundle up nicely)
@RAICESACTION has tried time & time again to sit at the table and discuss them head on.
We’ve seen the ins and outs of this draconian/Xenophobic immigration system being lifted up by the Trump Admin. We’ve seen it firsthand through our work in detention centers, at the bus station in SA, paying bonds...etc.

We know what we’re up against.
And we can tell you the answer is not going to protest at a Trump rally.

As you all know very well, thousands are locked in detention centers, over 60,000 who came here for asylum have been sent back to Mexico under MPP, and they’re gutting our refugee programs.
Last night, we all expected there to be a much larger conversation around this. We were ready to hear more than the age old “Comprehensive Immigration Reform” that means nothing to us after 10 years.
This is a humanitarian crisis & neither the debate stage or the moderators treated it as such.

People have said @RAICESACTION was disrespectful.
We think otherwise.
Disrespect has been shown to our communities from day 1 of this campaign cycle.
Last night @RAICESACTION said NO MORE silence on immigration. We cannot look away.

#DontLookAway
We need a humanitarian response. This is what the #MigrantJusticePlatform does. A unity blueprint intended as a launching point for an effort that centers grassroots voices on various aspects of immigration reform.
