Another revealing bit. Schakowsky asked if we've funded all the R&D. Azar: "No, that's not accurate. For instance Gilead has a product Remdesivir that was originally NIH-funded basic research I think out of the University of Alabama, but they've carried forward with development."

Today, Azar says he'll try for at least ONE affordable vax "We will work to ensure that there are appropriate protections to ensure the affordability of any vaccine produced out of joint venture work that taxpayers are funding.. We also have some purely private sector endeavors."
Gillibrand statement notes she voted against Azar. "I was concerned about his coziness with the pharmaceutical industry and his comments have proven my concerns right. Our only focus should be ensuring that every American has access to a vaccine, not whether big pharma" profits.
