1/ Time to dispel a few climate furphies.

The first is that no one is doing anything on #ClimateChange.

Here is the % change in emissions (excluding LULUCF) from 2005-17 for all #OECD nations.

Australia is one of only five (in red) that has increased emissions! #auspol

All 32 OECD countries combined make up 57% of world GDP and those countries that saw emissions fall make up 54% of world GDP.

Australia is not part of the pack. It is at the back and is an outlier #auspol #ClimateCrisis

3/ Australia’s total emissions rank it as 14 largest in the world.

Australia has higher absolute emissions than 40 countries with bigger populations.

If you look at per capita emissions, Australia tops it.

Last year I came up with a #Renewable Exports typology.

I reckon there are six main types of exports.

1. Direct electricity transfer via undersea cables, like the SunCable proposal to export power to Singapore afr.com/companies/ener…
2. Clean hydrogen-based fuel, using #renewable electricity to electrolyze water. Renewable hydrogen can then be turned into other chemicals like ammonia, which can be transported more easily and safely at scale.

@ITIFdc @beisgovuk @ScotGovEnergy @EnergySysCat @theCCCuk UK just makes top 10, performing best on 'social legitimation' (i.e. making clean energy more acceptable).

Does well too on 'option generation' (i.e. scale & diversity of clean energy RD&D funding).

Poorest on 'scale-up' (i.e. later stage demonstration & commercialisation).
@ITIFdc @beisgovuk @ScotGovEnergy @EnergySysCat @theCCCuk UK has done extremely well on growing its RD&D spend, ranking 1st of all the @MICleanEnergyRD countries. Kudos to @beisgovuk and its Industrial Strategy spending, which I imagine has been the primary driver.

OFGEM - the UK Government's energy regulator - are the biggest obstacle to making full use of #Scotland's #renewable #energy resources.

Energy policy is reserved to the UK Government, so there's absolutely nothing the Scottish Government can do about #Ofgem.

Here's a BBC article where Ofgem have supposedly given the "green light" for the first ever grid connection to Shetland.

(Believe it or not, we're in 2019 and the UK has never bothered to connect #Shetland to the National Grid.)

Unfortunately, approval for the grid connection to Shetland is conditional on the UK Government funding a wind farm project there, which will in turn be conditional on being able to transmit power to the National Grid.

Hi guys! @AtteHarjanne and me just published a paper "Abandoning the concept of #renewable #energy" at Energy Policy. In it, we argue that the concept of #renewableenergy (RE) is outdated. 1/

What we argue here is that using what is basically a 1970s-era definition of renewable energy, and conflating "renewable" with "sustainable" or even "clean," is becoming more a hindrance than a help in meeting the main challenge of the early 2000s - #climatechange . 2/
We argue that the concept of RE was largely set in stone well before the magnitude of #climate challenge, and actual problems with some sources that are technically renewable, was understood. This has resulted to, e.g., using the "renewable" label to cover all bioenergy. 3/
