1) In order to live responsibly in our culture & our time, we must understand the ideas of those who are shaping it. Phil, like sanitation, is not an option; the only issue is whether we will do it well or poorly & thus be either healthy or sick. Wisdom listens before speaking.
2) Today I rested after a period of frantic deadline-meeting. In this part of my life it seems that I get to teach & write a lot, but refusing to rest is hubris. So I read something for the first time in a couple of wks just b/c I wanted to & not as part of prep. for something.
3) Roger Scruton has been on my mind lately; may he rest in peace. When I heard of his passing, I decided to order 1 of his books & read it in his honour. So I got 'Fools, Frauds & Firebrands: Thinkers of the New Left.' I will be tweeting out some quotations & reflections on it.
4) He was one of the great philosophers of our time & his work will live on. Scruton is one of those who loved the Western heritage - like Tolkien, Lewis, Chesterton, Schall, Del Noce, Kirk & Solzhenitsyn. They cared about the permanent things. 2 words sum him up: farms & beauty.
