For the last century, able-bodied state prisoners assigned to work squads have had two options: work for no pay, or go to confinement. And for those 100 years, they've had largely the same complaints: not enough food, corrupt and cruel guards, unsanitary living conditions...
At Lancaster Work Camp, former prisoners described being forced to work in the heat without protections, a lack of nutritious food, scabies running rampant through dorms, men covered in filth forced to sit on their bunks and spread grime onto their beds without showering.

Private companies are doing more business than ever in Florida state's prison system. This doesn’t usually work out well for inmates and their loved ones, who are bearing record-high costs associated with incarceration. (1/11)
Inmate canteens were privatized in 2003. The DOC's dealings with Securus/JPay date back to 2005. But in recent years, contracts have expanded, and the FDC is bringing in more $ than ever from the commissions worked into them. (2/11) jacksonville.com/news/20180601/…
JPay — headquartered in Florida — controls emailing and multimedia tablets, video visitation, and most importantly: inmate banking accounts, used by inmates to buy virtually everything in prison. (3/11)

Novel #coronavirus (#COVID19) is a new virus strain that emerged in December 2019.

The first case in Washington State was ID'ed Jan. 21 and the first case in King County was ID'ed Feb. 28.

To date, there are 14 total cases in King County, and we expect additional cases.
While the vast majority of #COVID19 cases are mild, some populations are vulnerable to serious infections, which can lead to death.

Of the 14 identified cases to date, 5 of those have died.

Our deepest sympathies go out to their families and community.
More vulnerable populations include people over 60, particularly with underlying conditions like diabetes, heart disease and lung disease.

Come up with a plan with your doctor to identify your health risks for #coronavirus and how to manage symptoms.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today confirmed additional TRAVEL-RELATED infections of 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in the United States, this time in Arizona and California.
These patients recently returned to the U.S. from Wuhan, China, where an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel coronavirus has been ongoing since December 2019. This brings the total number of 2019-nCoV infections detected in the United States to five.
