A left populism, or for that matter "democratic socialism," fundamentally diverges from the center-left not so much on policy or plans but in key starting assumptions about the nature of conflict and competition—and most of all how to understand *the political*
That's why I find the focus on having the best, most detailed plans to be somewhat odd. Plans are obviously good when in power, less so in a campaign. Politics isn't necessarily about policy: We know empirically that most voters don't vote based on policy americanaffairsjournal.org/2018/11/left-p…

If Biden wins the nomination and then beats Trump, I expect it will look something like this: A sort of caretaker government that will provide some calm and stability (or at least the illusion of it) before whatever comes next comes
A Biden scenario might give us a bit of relief for 4 years, but I'd be rather worried about 2024-2032 unless someone like @AOC can fill the void. If we accept the theory of the case that we're "decaying," then calm & stability won't be enough. This is why starting premises matter
If Biden gets the nomination, I still believe Trump will probably beat him, and I just don't know if I have the energy to live under 4 more years of Trump. Perhaps now that Biden is the frontrunner, some Dems will start to get buyer's remorse

My name is Tanja and I came to the UK 11 years ago, PhD in hand. I’ve taught 100s of British students and have volunteered 100s of hours in our communities to support elderly and disabled British people. Under the planned #immigration system, I would not have been able to come.
Why? Primarily because the UK Govt has decided that “skill” is best defined through salary. Such a policy is not based on any understanding of how the labour market works nor the UK’s needs, but cheap tabloid politics based on falsehoods. But 1000s like me not being able to ...
... come here is of course the planned immigration system’s very purpose: to slash the number of immigrants from the EU significantly. That has already led to headlines this morning that will satify the racists, but will be very detrimental to the UK, its economy and society.

It is not known what prompted #RahulGandhi 2 try visiting #Kashmir last week, knowing fully well that the #Modi government got moral/legal sanction from the Supreme Court 2 take all preventive measures 2 stop blood spill and, that Gandhi would be returned like other leaders. 2/n
One may see the shadow of #Wayanad in #RahulGandhi's desperation but, to me his acts only helped the politically irrelevant #Left to stay in news. Left has a history of opposing Congress in States while joining hands hands in d Centre. #Congress's gains were short term. 3/n

Today's @bopinion post is about a subtle divide I see emerging in thinking on the left: Standard progressivism vs. a new left-populism.

The standard model of social democracy involves high tax rates, high REVENUE, and high government spending on social programs.

And the standard justification for this is welfarism - the idea that poor people need the money more than rich people do.
But a number of people on the left are now centering the argument that taxing the rich is good in and of itself, regardless of the revenue it raises for the government.
