Some evangelical/Pentecostal churches met in person yesterday; defying CDC recommendations not to gather in large groups and stay 6ft apart. Their justification? “We’re stronger than this virus.” 1/

But I don’t believe this defiance comes from strength. It comes from fear of change—from the same place, deep down, that compels some to despise anyone or any policy that threatens routines of life. Change is their gut-level enemy. #COVID19 #SocialDistancingNow #VirtualChurch 2/
Within these communities, the ability to fight the tide and maintain sameness is considered “strength”. 3/

But here’s the thing: Throughout history, it has not been the ones that have maintained routine that have survived and thrived. It has been those with capacity to #adapt. 4/ #COVID19 #SocialDistancingNow #virtualchurch
Strong leadership requires the ability to #adapt. 6/ #COVID19 #SocialDistancingNow #VirtualChurch
3 Tips to Increase Adaptability, as a person of faith:

1) Think of the change you are being asked to make... How does it feel? Where do you feel it in your body? Tighten that part of your body for 5 seconds. Rlease... Breathe... 7/ #VirtualChurch #COVID19 #SocialDistancingNow
2) What could I/we lose with change? What do I value about the old way? How have the old ways served me/us? What have been the limitations, disadvantages of old way? ... What was the goal of doing it the old way in the first place? #virtualchurch #COVID19 #SocialDistancingNow 8/
3) Breathe...Is there another way to achieve that goal? Are there other ways to serve the same needs in current context? How might God want to bless you/others through this change? How might a new way meet needs the old way could not? #VirtualChurch #COVID19 #SocialDistancingNow
Change is a part of life. Sometimes we have choice, other times we don’t. It’s in those times when change WILL happen—IS happening—that the only choice is HOW we respond. 10/ #virtualchurch #COVID19 #SocialDistancingNow
We can respond by letting our fears of loss take over or we can respond by naming the fear. Then we exercise our faith by opening up space for God to show us the possibilities. In time the fears shrink and the possibilities grow. #VirtualChurch #COVID19 #SocialDistancingNow 11/11
