Climate scientists are increasingly open about their doubts that we'll stay much below 2.5°C, with many expecting us to go over 3°C.
James Hansen's work indicates that we're heading rapidly to somewhere over 3.5°C.

Without a major reduction of emissions in the coming years (or maybe even despite it if we're deeply unfortunate) we'll hit 2°C by 2029-2039 and 3°C before mid-century.
Here's one of the latest IPCC climate models indicating the possibility of 3°C by the 2040s as a worst case scenario. If we don't slash emissions immediately, that's probably what will happen.
