/n *Thread*
The British are a funny bunch. I live in an area that voted overwhelmingly for Brexit. An area that bought into the ideology of ‘making Britain great again’ & have heard how we* made it through two world wars. (*most of us didn’t...)
/n I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard we will make Brexit a success through “the spirit of the blitz”. Yet, last night two key workers (Teacher & Midwife) had to play Ready Steady Cook whilst out shopping, because of the selfishness of others.
/n The shelves were bare. “Essentials” decimated as if looters had raided the building. This wasn’t just one supermarket either! Worst of all, in one supermarket, when asked about delivery times, the attitude from the MOS was “bad luck, should’ve got in sooner”!
/n When my OH explained that’s impossible for someone working in a school looking after kids, or the NHS actually dealing with #Covid19 the advice was clear - make sure we have a freezer & stock up. There’s people actually buying a 2nd/3rd freezer to do this.
/n The blitz and every rose-tinted memory of how the British can make it on our own through inalienable ‘Bulldog spirit’ is proving to be a lie. After a certain woman told us “...there’s no such thing as society”, it seems that we’ve become exceedingly selfish.
/n If I didn’t teach, I would be angry. I’d think that our nation was full of “I’m alright Jacks” that couldn’t give a damn whether their neighbour has food; yet every day I work with people that give their all to make sure those most at risk in our community get what’s needed.
/n Remember, in the weeks that lay before us that we have it cushy. Food won’t run out. Supply chains can’t cope with bulk-buying every day. This isn’t Yugoslavia in the mid-90s; people are safe, aside from becoming ill. This is a time where we need that rose-tinted...
/n “Spirit if the blitz”. It’s a test of our metal as a nation, as a community. To prove Maggie wrong - *There is such a thing a society*. If manufacturers can be retooled to make ventilators in the same way we made munitions & tanks, then the rest of us can do our bit!
/n Help a neighbour. Stop bulk buying. Remember NHS workers need to eat properly, so they can care for the sick. Remember the poorest can’t afford to bulk buy. Remember when we were told we could make it on our own? That was on our own as a nation!
/n Food banks need our support more than ever. Some of the most amazing kids I teach rely on them. They need this help more than ever - vulnerable kids/parents mean they aren’t in school to get their FSM.
/n *We* are better than this, Britain. I’ve seen what we can do in a humanitarian crisis away from our shores. We need to remember we are part of something bigger than ourselves.
/n Three things to consider: (1) “Do as you ought, not as you want” - Think of what’s right, not what benefits you personally.
/n (2) “Think to the finish” - Have the wisdom to consider your actions and their impact. When your grandchildren / grand-nieces and nephews ask “What did you do during the Covidvirus outbreak?” do you want to be remembered as the person bulk buying and not caring for others?
/n (3) “All one company” - We are one community. We are stronger and more successful together. We are no longer talking about Brexit! Our fractured nation has this opportunity to suck it up & pull together. Make the most of it. (This is where I got the #AllOneCommunity from 😉)
/n I’m proud to call myself a teacher. This profession has given me more than I’ve contributed. I’m surrounded by people driven to make life better for our communities. I know the conversations we have with our kids. There’s so much hope in them!
/n This job has made me a better person. I’m in awe of what our kids can achieve - it’s down to our communities to make sure we get our s**t together, & make sure the kids see us & the example we set as a positive one.
/n I appreciate I’m screaming in an echo chamber of teachers here! But I needed to put it out there. Take care of each other people.
