1. The #COVID19 pandemic is taking on very different forms in different countries. And yet in both of the two worst outbreaks so far – China and Italy – men are dying more than women.

4. So, is it nature or nurture? That’s what my article with @sarahkaplan48 and @Min_Joo_Kim_ explores, and there’s evidence for both.

8. These data are preliminary. And yet in China and Italy, where the death toll is high, at some point you have to wonder if they are not indeed telling us something.
9. The question now is whether this pattern will keep showing up as the disease spreads.

2. I spent last week researching this subject -- our story published late yesterday – and here’s what I found to be the bottom line: There are widespread suspicions of a link and good reasons for those suspicions. But, current published research doesn’t give definitive answers.
3. During the SARS outbreak, for instance, there was a significant study that found worse mortality in Chinese cities with worse air pollution, but it couldn’t control for confounding factors. Not proof of causation, then. link.springer.com/content/pdf/10…

1. In this story, @JohnMuyskens and I looked at @gcarbonproject data to see when emissions have actually declined notably in the past. The answer is "world wars, sweeping economic contractions or large-scale geopolitical events such as the fall of the Soviet Union."
2. If recent trends continue -- with emissions in China down by a quarter in recent weeks, and oil markets and air travel showing disruption around the world -- the novel coronavirus could join this group. But it's very early to say for sure.
3. The upshot is that at least up until now, only major events of upheaval have been sufficient to stop the world's emissions growth. Or as @Peters_Glen put it to me, "whatever the driver, it will have to be big, and global."

1. Talk about a case where paleo-climate research could have some big policy implications. washingtonpost.com/climate-enviro…
2. It sounds like scientists just doing what scientists do -- drilling into Greenland ice, withdrawing samples of ancient air from ancient ice...typical.
3. But this ancient air (about 270 years old) turns out not to contain much methane from fossil sources -- the very oldest methane, from deep in the Earth.

The mortality rate in #Italy is 5.8% --higher in men. The mean (not the median) of the deceased's age is 80 years--5 years higher than the mean of total cases.

#China’s National Health Commission said at @WHO briefing in Beijing this week no one is immune from #COVIDー19 since it is a new pathogen. Nationally, fatality rate is 3-4%. But China health officials earlier posted data on #coronavirus that might help when assessing your risk:
A team from #China’s CDC published research in a Chinese journal of epidemiology. The data, based on 70k patients, is till Feb 11 (so a little old) but it reveals trends. Fatality rate for elderly at 8-15%..
Those with compromised immune systems at higher risk. For heart disease, death rate is 10.5%. Men are dying from #coronavirus at almost twice the rate as women. Link to study here: chinaepi.icdc.cn/zhlxbx/ch/read…

1. To what extend can #COVID19 be contained outside #China? Here the fast infection-rates in #SouthKorea & #Italy are a concern.

2. How well do countries respond? Some seem to do OK, others seem to have been negligent (see #Italy).
@HarrisSamaras @Harvard @mlipsitch c) Currently #trains from Northern #Italy are still reaching #Germany - This is a great way to spread the risk & make containment difficult.
3. Can countries cope with a bigger number of severley sick people? The South of #Germany only has 60 Iron-Lungs. Not much!
