1. The #COVID19 pandemic is taking on very different forms in different countries. And yet in both of the two worst outbreaks so far – China and Italy – men are dying more than women.

2. The pattern also appears in South Korea, when far more women than men have been initially infected, based on the current data. Nonetheless, more men have died so far. cdc.go.kr/board/board.es…
3. In Italy, the figures are particularly striking with 71 percent of total deaths occurring among men, based on the latest figures, vs 29 percent of total deaths occurring among women. epicentro.iss.it/coronavirus/bo…
4. So, is it nature or nurture? That’s what my article with @sarahkaplan48 and @Min_Joo_Kim_ explores, and there’s evidence for both.
5. In all three of these countries (China, Italy, South Korea), men have shorter average lifespans, drink more, smoke more, and die more often of cardiovascular and other noncommunicable diseases between ages 30 and 70. apps.who.int/iris/handle/10…
6. In this sense, the #covid19 pattern of deaths may be mapping onto something pre-existing which likely involves, in part, risk behaviors and perhaps especially smoking. washingtonpost.com/climate-enviro…
7. But there is also evidence regarding immune system differences between men and women which we also discuss in the piece humgenomics.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…
8. These data are preliminary. And yet in China and Italy, where the death toll is high, at some point you have to wonder if they are not indeed telling us something.
9. The question now is whether this pattern will keep showing up as the disease spreads.
10. Figures from Spain do not appear to break down deaths by gender, at least at this point. (@ me if I am missing something) covid19.isciii.es
11. Figures from France and Germany also appear to show the same gender divide, but with fewer deaths so far, especially in the latter country.

12. Tragically, as the death toll continues to rise, we are going to know more. For now, our story on the current data is here
