A nontrivial number of Americans seem to believe that magic is real, and that physical threats can be made to go away if only enough people tweet that the threats don't exist.
A few years ago I wrote about this phenomenon as it applies to climate change denial. Now we can see it again in the responses to coronavirus.

This shouldn't require saying, but:

Magic is not real.

And bullshit is bullshit even if you get 22,000 people to retweet it and some talking heads to say it on cable news.

U.S. coronavirus testing actually fell slightly today. This is disappointing.

Hopefully it's just lumpy reporting, and it'll surge again tomorrow. But our growth rate seems to be slowing down, and we're still at only half of Korean levels.

NY slowed from 17k/day to 13k/day. Could be a sign of new restrictions on testing.

CA reported only 1k compared to >13k the day before. That's probably lumpy reporting rather than a real drop in testing.
WA is holding roughly steady at around 3k-4k/day.

NJ had a big bump in testing, up to 12k/day from 2k/day. That could be lumpy reporting, or the state starting to report more private-clinic tests.

1/OK, let's talk about how long shutdowns and shelter-in-place orders need to last.

Trump says he wants things open by Easter. That's a pipe dream. In fact, we need to keep things closed AT LEAST two weeks longer than that. Let me explain why.
2/Assume that shutdowns start reducing new infections IMMEDIATELY, the day after they go into effect.

It will still be 4-5 days before the daily INCREASE in the number of people with SYMPTOMS starts to go down, because that's the virus' incubation period.
3/After people develop symptoms, it takes several days for their case to be confirmed. This is because it takes a while to get tested and get the results back.

So under OPTIMAL conditions, it will take maybe 2 weeks to see new daily confirmed cases start to drop.

People like this love exploiting MLK’s work—which they never engage in good faith anyway—when trying to silence people or engage in erasure.
A few years ago I wrote about this particular misuse of MLK’s words as a silencing tactic.
That person conflates MLK’s desire for the end of oppression with a desire for erasure of identity, an erasure MLK never proffered. And they skipped over significant parts of the speech delivered at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. kinginstitute.stanford.edu/king-papers/do…

I'm not sure why #UmaThurman's story hit me. Was it because 30yr old me dodged a bullet with #HarveyWeinstein? Was it because her friend saw her disheveled and hysterical? Was it because of what happened in that car scene?

No way to know. #PTSD is like that. Unpredictable.
