"We need a woman for President" is an implied public good.
"We need Medicare for All" is an explicit public good.
Now, it's time. We can, will, should elect a woman.
But, the trick is this:
They conflate that with "defeating Trump is all that matters", work people into a froth so they vote identity, not policy.
Wash, rinse repeat for decades on.
Bernie is for Medicare For All. Warren was for it, until she wasn't, and that comes down to money in politics and her own ideological issues about all this.
Social Democrats know the way to beat Trump is to answer his BS, and that of the Democratic party frankly,
(more)
.. with a strong social democratic policy. Democratic socialism, in Bernie's case.
That's got priorities in order.
We nominate someone about that explicit public good, and we advance the cause of actualizing that public good!
Had there been a strong woman, not corrupt taking big money? Great! That's a sweetener on top of what is already a solid package, again EXPLICIT PUBLIC GOOD.
What the Dem leadership does is IMPLIED good.
These are not the same!
So, in the case of Biden, "He's electable", "He's good old Uncle Joe", etc... and most importantly, "He's not Trump."
That is literally the WHOLE CAMPAIGN!
One other thing:
When "Defeating Trump is all that matters", then:
You don't matter.
The public good does not matter.
It's literally all about who does the corrupt non-governance, and who does not.
But, there is a catch!
They are saying policy does not matter, because whatever they manage is better than Trump
And that is why we lose. For decades on now:
MORE AMERICANS STRUGGLE EVERY YEAR.
Now there are so many struggling that policy matters. And worse?
Many struggling people do not see the tepid difference between Biden and Trump as meaningful.
So, they no vote, or protest.
That well heeled faction of the party thinks they can just pick someone, "because Trump" and win, "Because Trump!"
But people need more public good. And implying that, "because anything is better than Trump" is actually saying a lesser evil is good.
BUT IT IS NOT GOOD
IT IS JUST LESS BAD.
When the numbers were smaller, that framing worked. We leftists were pinned.
But the numbers are big enough now that we can hold, get position, have standing, and they absolutely do need us to win.
Which brings me to my last point in all this.
We are not a force to be recognized, until we can say "no" and it has teeth. Clinton was our first "no" and they want to believe that was just her incompetence, russians, Bernie, whatever the fuck sticks.
But it wasn't any of that. It was people saying "NO" to less worse!
Now the numbers are way bigger. We can say "NO" and mean it.
The oligarchs, corrupt people, elites do not like Trump, because Trump is airing way too much of their dirty laundry.
People going to jail type airing, to be clear.
So, to them, he's gotta go.
There are a lot of pissed off Americans, who don't like Trump very much, but they do like how he's exposing a ton of stuff. It's the same reason many like Bernie.
Exposing, finally putting a voice to stuff almost unsaid otherwise.
And that's why we have to say "NO"
When their pick loses this time?
We matter. We are a thing, and we can grow, be recognized, and all that, because suddenly all the money in the world can't control the narrative.
And control over that narrative is all that matters.
