A few thoughts on lessons learned from early in the COVID-19 pandemic [THREAD] :

1) We need universal broadband. Sending people to work from home, homeschool, etc. is only possible if everyone has reliable, high-speed access to the internet.

2) We should listen to scientists..
...when they tell us we need to get prepared for disaster ahead. Scientists have been warning us about our lack of preparedness for pandemics (and climate change) for a while.

3) Early action is cheaper and less impactful than late action. As problems compound...
...solutions become more severe and costly.

4) We should use this "downtime" to make improvements to our infrastructure. The @Hyatt where I stayed used its <5% occupancy rate as an excuse to upgrade the internet access in each of its rooms. If they can...
...use this time to upgrade their infrastructure, why can't cities do the same thing. While traffic is low, this is the time to paint/stripe streets for dedicated bus lanes and protected bike lanes.

5) Social connectivity matters: let's invest in our relationships...
...with friends, family, co-workers and community members during this pandemic AND after. It turns out that while physical connectivity is bad for the spread of infection, emotional connectivity is good for mental health, a sense of belonging, and collaborative problem-solving.
6) It turns out that many more of us can telework than we thought. So let's keep some of those habits so that we spend less time commuting and more time at home with our families.

That's my short list. What are your lessons learned? [END]
