COVID-19 'Infodemic': Researchers Step Up to Stop the Spread medscape.com/viewarticle/92… So, this researcher has received a large grant to study this epidemic of misinformation--which, I agree, is a grave problem--
and figure out how to get rid of it. But I can't imagine any strategy to get rid of misinformation that doesn't strongly risk getting rid of good information. Usually, I'd say, "Solution obvious: Free speech. Let the good information rise to the top via open debate.'
But we're the targets of a serious, state-sponsored disinformation campaigns the object of which is to confuse the public--and they work. I see, in real time, how dangerous misinformation spreads, and know that it's getting people killed, in real time.
I genuinely think it's an open question: Does an open society fare better in a pandemic? Is there a serious argument for censorship? I'm against it, anyway: I figure once that starts, it never stops. But I wish people would voluntarily stop spreading horseshit.
